Photographs of the construction of London's Tower Bridge, dating back to 1892, have come to light after spending time in a skip, and in a plastic back under a bed. Nicknamed the "Wonder Bridge", it was the first construction of its kind. It took 8 years, 5 major contractors, and 432 construction workers to complete the mammoth task, so desperately needed at the east end of London had become so crowded.
In 1876, the City of London Corporation decided that something had to be done to avoid the massive transport delays of workers and delivery people having to travel in to London Bridge, and then back out again. The "Special Bridge or Subway Committee" was set up to find a workable design for the new crossing, which was put out to a public competition. In October 1884, Horace Jones, in collaboration with John Wolfe Barry, came up with the idea that was to become the iconic Tower Bridge.
